Female representation in plant-collecting trips in the Botanic Garden world is limited. Sponsorship is one way to help curb this trend, allowing senior leadership to use their personal influence to advocate a woman for a key role. In the times of the #MeToo movement, it is even more crucial for men in leadership roles to give opportunities for women to advance professionally. Data on group dynamics suggest that in team activities, mixed-gender teams are the most successful overall. When women are part of a male dominant group, there is more collaboration, emotional stability, cultural awareness (women are more attuned), and more empathy. Learn about the importance of actively promoting mixed-gender teams on plant-collecting trips and the benefits of having women in these expeditions. This inclusion will encourage the prevalence of women in better horticulture positions.
