Botanic gardens are uniquely positioned to address some of the world's most pressing scientific issues like climate change. In spite of this, the challenge remains: How do you take complex messages and make them broadly accessible? How do you connect with someone whose beliefs may be wildly different than your own? When a scientific topic like climate change is deeply intertwined with values and politics, interpersonal science communication is crucial. This session will explore the keys to communication for discussing tough science topics that may arise in interpretation and education in botanical garden settings. These keys will include strategies and tips for knowing and understanding your audience, creating empathetic conversations, breaking down jargon, building analogies, and sharing science through stories.
